Over decades of planning international concert tours for American and international orchestras and choirs, MMC Directors have developed and advocated for a model of touring that emphasizes immersive and highly impactful exchanges with local musicians and communities in 145 countries on six continents, with a particular focus on serving underprivileged communities in destinations around the world that have been historically overlooked by touring ensembles.
Of the hundreds of previous projects across the world, high profile examples of pioneering projects from recent years include side-by-side rehearsals between Cuban music students and members of the Minnesota Orchestra, members of the Cincinnati Symphony in an exchange with refugees Utretcht and collaborations between South African musicians, composers and members of the Minnesota Orchestra and Chorale. In many cases, these exchanges foster relationships between ensembles or individual members, crossing boundaries of geography and culture; last autumn, for instance, the Gauteng Choristers were invited to perform again with the Minnesota Orchestra in Minneapolis, following their collaboration in a historic collaboration in Soweto in August 2018.
MMC will make it possible to make these opportunities accessible to a broader range of communities who will benefit for years to come
